What is the difference between an emergency and a disaster?

An emergency is something that happens where you need the help of police, fire, or emergency medical services.

An emergency becomes a DISASTER when it affects all or a large part of a community.  Many different agencies are needed to respond when a large area is damaged or many people are hurt.
